"He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty" (Psalm 91).
Many years ago, my family and I rented several cabins on Lake Texoma; a very large lake on the Texas and Oklahoma border. We also rented a small boat and motor to get us out to a little island where we could swim and fish. This lake is so big it can generate its own weather! In the hottest part of the summer large thunderstorms develop almost every afternoon.
One of afternoon, while we were out on our little island we watched a huge storm develop in the distance and we decided to leave the exposed island and make a mad dash back to the mainland, and to the safety of our cabins. It took us two complete trips to get everyone and all our gear back ashore. The last trip was real scary as the storm was already upon us, but we made it just before hard rain and hail started to pound us. We gathered what we could from the little aluminum boat and what we could carry as we ran at top speed to the nearest shelter; we didn't have time to make it to our cabins. Instead, we ran for a public restroom which we knew was made of concrete and cinder blocks. We judged this was our safest place to hide from the storm. We barely got everyone, all our gear and our little dog into our improvised shelter when a tornado ripped through the campground and we watched our little boat get sucked up into the huge funnel of the tornado! For a while we were terrified and worried we might not survive! We were so thankful for the safety of the little shelter we found just in the nick of time. Thank God after the storm passed we were all together safe and alive.
Where is the safe shelter for you and I to run to when frightening storms of life bear down on us? Where shall we rest? The Lord says in today's featured Scripture those who dwell in His shelter will rest also in His mighty shadow. As I consider this Spiritual fact I envision a downy little eaglet hunkered down under the wings of its strong parent as fierce summer storm tries to blow the little eaglet's nest apart. All the while though, the little one knows it is safe there under the mighty wings of its parent. So are we also safe up under the wings of our heavenly Father. He is our shelter; our strong tower; He is our refuge and our fortress.
