THE BEREANS AND THE TRUTH

Berea (modern Verria) was located approximately 50 miles (80 km) from Thessalonica, a district of Macedonia (Greece.) The name means “place of many waters.” Mount Olympus, an extraordinary landmark, stood within view of what was once known as; Berea. This must have been a beautiful place to live as it rested between the sea and the mountains. The warm, ocean wind would have contrasted the chilly, snowcapped mountains in the distance.
Christians who lived there in the time of the apostle Paul were considered to be nobler than the Thessalonians. Why were the people of Berea considered to be more noble than the Thessalonians? As Paul preached to them they received the message with great eagerness, but examined the Scriptures every day to see for themselves if what Paul was saying was true. This story is found in (Acts 17:11).
None of us is so learned concerning the Bible that we don’t need to search the Scriptures for ourselves. As believers of the Word we have the right to ask questions and seek proof of the teachings we hear. Teaching and preaching must align with God’s Word, or it is false teaching. Even the smallest portion of Scripture has to align with Scripture as a whole!
We aren’t to argue, nor are we to seek to find fault in our pastors or teachers, but rather to confirm truthful explanation of what we hear by checking with the only standard of truth – the Scriptures themselves.
Study the Word of God; discover the Truth personally, and prepare yourself to receive the true enlightenment an anointed preacher or teacher will provide you. Do you own an exhaustive Bible concordance (Vines), an easy to read Bible dictionary (Vines Complete Expository Dictionary), and some good commentaries? These are just some of my favorite references; but there are other good ones to choose from. Like the Bereans, we too can exercise the noble practices they modeled, and always verify what we hear with what is written in God’s infallible Word.
Here in my blog; “Secret Place,” I would never intend to mislead you, but I am not without human error at times. So, please read any Scriptures I may refer to for yourself to make sure what I say aligns with God’s Word. Feel free to check my facts. In doing so, you will surely discover a lot more about this awesome God we serve.

Our Walk With God

“Listen, my son, accept what I say, and the years of your life will be many. I guide you in the way of wisdom and lead you along straight paths. When you walk, your steps will not be hampered, when you run, you will not stumble” (Proverbs 4:10-12). Our lives are built upon our first step, and   then proceed step after step after step thereafter. As infants we learn to crawl, then stand and eventually to walk to the waiting hands of our proud fathers and mothers. Our walking skills can develop into running skills; some of us will go on to run races, some will even run long distance marathons, but it all begins first with our desire to walk. The Lord tells us to listen to what He says to us through His Holy Spirit and the years of our lives will be many; as we go through life, our steps will not be hampered; when we hurry through our impossible daily schedules and race through our lives, we will not stumble.   All successful runners have a professional trainer, our trainer is ...

God’s Family

He provides resources for the family “For You, Lord, are good, and ready to forgive, and abundant in mercy to all those whom call upon You” (Psalm 86:5). God’s plan for marriage and the family, in the Bible, is intended to be ideal, full of prosperity for every member. Would you say this describes your family? Maybe, maybe not, however, even if your family has missed His mark His Word deals with life realistically. Many of us experience some aspect of failure or serious disappointment with the way our family is living. Many families today are divided by divorce or living as single-parent family units. God alone can provide the needed resources and the loving care vital for the needs of these families who are dealing with life. If you are having trouble in your family turn to Jesus. He is your primary resource for forgiveness and your hope for renewal (Ephesians 1:7).   He forgives no matter if the failure is yours or it is one of those times when someone else fails yo...

God never changes who He is

The popular cry of the people here in America today is for “change.” Yet in some parts of the world there are those who use all means, including terrorism to resist it. There are some people who are determined to leave ancient traditions, and often times, corruptible governments just as they are, and have been for hundreds of thousands of years. Many of these nations do not recognize God. God is always the same; today, tomorrow, and forever. He never changes; this knowledge about Him enables us to have total reliability in Him. His character is as follows: God is omnipotent . All power is His, and nothing is beyond His control. He enforces His perfect will. He is unstoppable by any force in heaven or on earth! God is omnipresent. He is everywhere imaginable and unimaginable all at the same time! No person or place is beyond His presence. Space and time are before Him always. He determines everything for all places and all persons. God is omniscient. All that is happening to all ...
