Kicking the bad habit

This was a term I used to hear referring to quitting smoking. When I was finally successful at quitting cigarettes nearly thirty-six years ago; I would say “No thanks, I kicked the habit” when someone offered me a cigarette. Our bad habits are killing us; robbing us of the good health and happiness God intends.

Smoking is only one of the bad habits we can pick up though. You probably know what your bad habits are. We all have some. For some it may be drinking too much, or it may be stretching the truth, may be spending too much is something you do. Well, no problem or bad habit is too much for God. He wants to free us from all these traps of the world, especially the ones that keep us from growing into the person He created us to be. He wants us to be more like Himself, and He is willing to help us with all the weaknesses we have.

As we submit ourselves to God admitting our shortcomings, we become more able to receive His power that goes to work in us. The Bible clearly gives practical advice for exchanging our bad habits for Godly behavior. (Ephesians 4:22-24) instructs us to; “Put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and … put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.”

“Get into the Word!” is something we'll hear our Spiritual leaders say, because the Bible is where we discover the thoughts and instructions of God. The Bible is our great help for applying the above Scriptural principal. Memorizing Scriptures is very beneficial, and Bible study and prayer will give us the essential foundation we need for breaking our old, nasty habits. As God’s thoughts enter our minds, our actions will begin to thankfully change.

I am taking an inventory of my own bad habits as I write this message, perhaps you may want to do the same? Especially review any bad habits that directly affect your physical health, and then move on to address those that are causing you any mental anguish. Remember you do not have to tackle these bad habits alone! You have an awesome, caring God who has given you His Holy Spirit as a helper and counselor.

Become a new person, experience a peace like you may have never known, and enjoy the new freedom you have a right to as a true follower of Jesus Christ, the One Messiah! May I also say I welcome you, and I call you FRIEND! May our God in heaven richly bless you now and forever more.

APPROVED

“Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15). (2 Timothy 2:14-26) instructs those whom He knows are His ; and don’t we aspire to be recognized as such, to be approved by God? He tells us to avoid godless chatter (gossip), because we will become more and more ungodly. God warns that what we say can affect others, even destroying the faith of some. Heaven forbid we should say anything to do such damage!   Approved we flee the evil desires of youth we pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace. We don’t have anything to do with foolish and stupid arguments because we know they only produce quarrels. As God’s servants we mustn’t quarrel; instead we must be kind, able to teach, and be not resentful.   Approved we are to gently instruct those who oppose us, hoping God will grant them repentance and lead them to the knowledge of His truth. Over the past few years I have been inspired by the Holy Spirit to write what He has given me; many times I was awakened in the middle of the night to write them down. I hope you will take look at these brief messages which can be found in the "sidebar" of this blog under the heading of "BLOG ARCHIVE." There may be something in these that personally speaks to you. I pray there is. Thanks for reading my blog and may God richly bless you.

Walk Of Faith

I wonder, do you think we miss God’s purpose for our lives because we are waiting to learn more of what God has planned for us? Truth is; God isn’t required to lay it all out for us. All He must do if He has a plan for our lives is to show us how and then enable us to do it. It seems when we don’t know all the particulars, life is too perplexing. We think, “ but I need to know just what God wants me to do.” Abram (later known as Abraham) probably had thoughts just like this. God asked Abram to go somewhere he wasn’t familiar with and he most likely thought of asking God, Lord, must I go somewhere I don’t know, can’t I just stay here in Haran? However, God’s plan for Abram was far greater than anything Abram could ever imagine. Our personal feelings, vision, and human reasoning will always get in the way of our walk of faith . God teaches us to have faith in Him by placing us in positions where our feelings, vision, and common knowledge don’t work for us. Haven’t you ex...
